Each piece in the ENSEMBLE collection has a unique purpose: a candlestick, pen case, incense holder, paperweight, and more. The modular nature of ENSEMBLE allows users to experiment with its configuration. When aligned via the central hole in each piece, the ENSEMBLE transforms into a sculptural vase, embodying Muuto’s characteristic balance between craftsmanship, playfulness, and functional design.

Design companies often send out material samples to showcase their products and conceptual philosophies. However, these samples are typically shipped in ill-designed packaging, and once received, they are often discarded, contributing to material waste and missed opportunities to communicate a brand’s ethos.

At the same time, touching and interacting with physical materials is crucial for clients and end-users to make purchase decisions. Material samples often serve as the first tactile introduction to a brand’s product line, highlighting the importance of design in every aspect of the experience.

ENSEMBLE reimagines the material sample experience, transforming it from a disposable kit into a versatile, long-lasting accessory. Our question was: What if material samples could be repurposed into functional, aesthetic objects?


We designed ENSEMBLE as a modular system that uses Muuto's material samples to create a customizable, multi-functional accessory. Each piece in the stack has a central hole, allowing them to be assembled around a sleek, minimalist tube that acts as a unifying core. Users can stack the pieces to form a sculptural vase or use them individually for everyday purposes. This flexibility encourages users to interact with Muuto's design ethos in their daily lives.
